Since graduating in 2016, our Female
Sports Person, Samantha Wheelhouse has been studying a Bachelor of Exercise and
Sport Science at Australian Catholic University. We caught up with Sam to see
what else she has been up to since leaving Holland Park SHS and some memorable
moments about the school.
What have you done since graduating?
I am currently
studying a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science at Australian Catholic
University. I am also coaching a volleyball team at Holland Park.
What do you do for a living now?
Besides studying,
which I do full time, I umpire volleyball games each week. I plan to get a more
stable part time job in the near future to help pay for my tuition.
Do you think your time at Holland Park helped you
to pursue this?
For sure, the most
important skill that I learnt in high school was organisation. When I started
university, it was up to me to make sure that I wasn’t missing out on anything.
It’s important to keep up to date on when assignments are due. Holland Park
helped me prepare for this and for the career I’ve chosen to do.
Did you enjoy your time at Holland Park SHS?
I did enjoy my time
at Holland Park. It was a small community, so it was easy to get to know your
teachers and find your way around the school.
Who was your favourite teacher?
There wasn’t
just one favourite teacher, there were many. Most of the classes were PE
related. Especially Ms Ross who always supported me and offered help if I
needed it.
I also got on well with Ms Joss. She became one of
my closest teachers, especially in my last year of school.
What was your most memorable moment as a student?
Most memorable
moment would have to be dancing in senior PE.
What was your funniest moment as a student?
y funniest moment
as a student came from in the classroom. I remember this one time in a grade 11
PE class, we were doing psychology as our topic for the term. One day in a
theory class, Ms Ross read out to the class what she has observed us doing. She
told us what each one of us would do in each class based on the idea of
psychology. It was hilarious because we knew that was she was saying was spot
on!
A lot of my funniest moments also came from
volleyball training, which usually involved people getting in hit in face or
something silly. There would be times where something would happen, and we’d
try to play on but we just couldn’t stop laughing from what had happened
before.
Are you still friends with anybody you met at
Holland Park?
I still keep in
contact with some of my high school friends. Three of us make it a regular
thing to see each other every week and do something. I do also see others
maybe once a month but not as regularly anymore.
Is there any other information that you feel would
be a great addition to this article?
There’s nothing
really else I can say but I had a wonderful time at Holland Park. I’ve met
friends that I know I will keep seeing as we grow up.
