Since graduating in 1997, Tom
Moore studied Engineering at the University of Queensland graduating with first
class honours. He has since worked as an engineering consultant for 13 years
and now works for Queensland Urban Utilities, planning future upgrades. We
caught up with Tom to see what else he has been up to since graduating...
What have you done since graduating?
I studied Engineering at University of Queensland between 1998 and 2001
and graduated with first class honours. I then worked as an engineering consultant between 2002 and 2015. Since then I have worked for Queensland Urban
Utilities, planning for the future upgrades and improvements to water and sewer
networks.
Do you think your time at
Holland Park helped you to pursue this career? If yes, how?
I think my subject selection was geared towards my interests. I tried
other schools but they weren’t able to offer the subjects (without
clashes). This did mean my IPT class was
at 8am in the morning but I managed to survive.
Do you still live locally?
Yes! I recently purchased an old
Queenslander in Annerley. My wife is from the ‘north side’ so it took some
convincing but completely worth it.
Did you enjoy your time at Holland Park SHS?
I moved from Townsville to Brisbane at the end of Grade 11. Although it was difficult at the beginning not knowing anybody, I made some very strong friendships which I still have today, some 20 years later.
Who was your favourite
teacher? Why?
I would have to say my Chemistry teacher. It was a small class
of around 6 students so the teaching felt very personal and she was very
committed and passionate about learning.
What was your most
memorable moment as a student?
The day I rode to school when it
was raining and I became absolutely saturated but had to enter Maths B drenched
to the bone.
What advice do you have for
current students?
Always embrace
opportunities that come your way. It is such a great way to gain experience that you can use throughout your career and life. Say
yes!
